I adore the thought and writing of Dallas Willard (1935-2013).
Think about this: a Charismatic Southern Baptist teaching in the Philosophy Department at USC—how’s that for unexpected brilliance?
One of his early works, Hearing God: Developing a Conversational Relationship with God, left such an impact on me that I read it three times. It’s all about guidance from God.
Honestly, I don’t think my mind ever returned to its original shape after diving into it.
Willard had this rare ability to bring deep, transformative insights. Christianity Today called him “A man from another time zone.” And for good reason—he sought to live in the light and life of the Age to Come as the New Testament teaches.
Do yourself a favor: absorb anything by him.
Jesus’ resurrection is the beginning of God’s new project not to snatch people away from earth to heaven but to colonize earth with the life of heaven. That, after all, is what the Lord’s Prayer is about.
Let’s think. Look at the Lord’s prayer again …
It makes all the difference in your now if you think everything is going up there some day, or if you think that heaven and earth will be fully seamless … starting now.
